Stefano Mancuso, the story of a great man and his commitment to the protection of the environment
15 February 2021
Stefano Mancuso, Italian botanist, academic and essayist, teaches general arboriculture and plant ethology at the University of Florence. He is President of the International Laboratory of Plant Neurobiology. The world-renowned scientist is also author of numerous scientific publications, all aimed at promoting the idea that we must respect and protect nature, now more than ever. According to the academic, the plant world has its own system of intelligence and resilience, with each plant adapting perfectly to its surrounding environment. The value and importance of plants in protecting the planet from global warming is beyond doubt. Indeed, plants not only produce oxygen, but also remove carbon dioxide – which contributes to the greenhouse effect – from the air. Also, by providing shade, plants – and trees in particular – can lower temperatures, regulating humidity in the air. It is for these reasons that Stefano Mancuso works hard to advocate for this extraordinary world, to raise awareness and foster a love for it, with a view to protecting it. Global warming, a problem we have been aware of for some time, is quickly leading to destruction and mass extinction. The reason is well-known: numerous living species in the animal world, now facing extinction, depend on plants.
Simonato, which supports Stefano Mancuso's views on environmental protection, made the decision way back in 1997 to convert to eco-compatible farming practices – which seek to respect natural processes – in growing its organic aromatic herbs. Its facility is fitted with state-of-the art equipment, in keeping with environmental regulations, including an irrigation system that optimises responsible use of water, given the preciousness of this environmental resource. Simonato's contribution aims to promote biodiversity, avoiding the use of GMOs and pesticides to protect the wellbeing of all.
